Abstract: With their endogenous growth potential, rural areas need to be thoroughly explored to adapt to the difficult realities and requirements of sustainable development. The basic mechanism for adapting rural development to the new socio-economic, political and environmental environment is seen in the implementation of the principles of sustainability. The concept of sustainable development, formulated by the joint efforts of scientists from many countries and international organizations of the United Nations, has become the ideological basis of programs and strategies for transforming rural life, bringing to the forefront the socio-cultural foundations of its existence. Ensuring sustainable development in the context of the digital transition is inextricably linked to the "Smart Village". Its prototype is the "smart city" model, adapted to the development of rural areas. Smart Village is a new generation village concept. It involves the implementation of the principles of sustainable rural development based on the use of innovative solutions, digital technologies, and the creation of effective jobs. The integrated application of the above is designed to help improve the quality of working life and the standard of living in general, as well as to overcome the digital divide between urban and rural areas. The transformation of traditional rural areas in the direction of "smart" is the optimization of agribusiness processes, management, rural infrastructure and respect for the environment based on information technology, analytical algorithms, neural networks and the Internet of Things in order to improve the quality of life of villagers. The costs associated with the introduction and use of digital technologies in rural areas are high. Only from 2021 to 2024. they increased by 813.3 million rubles. This should be taken into account when making changes to the basic or conservative version of the Russian Agro-industrial Complex Development Strategy.
