Abstract: Grain production is the backbone of Russia's agro-industrial complex, ensuring food security and shaping the country's export potential. In the context of economic instability, sanctions pressure and the transformation of global food markets, issues of increasing the efficiency of the grain subcomplex at the regional level are becoming particularly relevant. The purpose of the study is to analyze the economic efficiency of grain production and develop strategic directions for its improvement, taking into account market conditions and the competitive environment. The article reveals a contradiction between the growth of technological indicators and a decrease in economic efficiency: with an increase in yield, the level of profitability decreased significantly due to an outstripping increase in the cost of production. The analysis of the competitive environment has shown that the general grain market is characterized as moderately concentrated, but the markets of individual crops are monopolized, which creates prerequisites for price dictates and displacement of small producers. Forward-looking calculations show ambiguous trends: the expected increase in gross revenue is accompanied by the risk of falling into a "cost trap" when the projected level of profitability is lower than the actual figures of recent years and the average annual values. The necessity of implementing a marketing strategy, including government support, the development of organizational forms of management, the improvement of pricing mechanisms and cost optimization, is substantiated.
