Abstract: Organic agriculture can become a solution not only to the problem of hunger and malnutrition, but also to other problems, including poverty, irrational use of water resources, climate change, as well as unsustainable production and consumption. More than 800 million people are hungry, and about 2 billion are malnourished. Approximately 30% of the world's adult population is overweight or obese, and about 30% of the food produced in the world is lost or discarded. In 2019, the FAO published the report «The state of global biodiversity for food production and agriculture». According to the report, of the thousands of plant species grown for food production, fewer than 200 contribute significantly to global production, and only nine of them account for 66% of total agricultural production. The negative impact of resource–intensive or industrial agriculture on the environment and human health, its inability to provide farmers with a decent income, its high dependence on fossil fuels and vulnerability to climate change all point to the need for change. With the right approach, agriculture based on the principles of organic farming can become a transitional stage towards the solutions necessary to create sustainable food systems and ensure climate sustainability, in addition, preserving agrobiodiversity of crops.
