Abstract: The authors explore in the article the issues of development of economic forms in the context of the market transformation of Russian agriculture. The authors introduced methodological clarifications into the categorical apparatus of economic entities: they indicated the main reasons for the lack of uniform approaches to defining economic categories, gave examples, and proposed one of the author's approaches to defining different forms of business activity from the standpoint of the institutional approach. The authors identified the main stages of institutional transformation of the agro-industrial complex and formulated the features of each of these stages, indicating the nature of uncertainty in the formation of institutions at the first stage, as well as the key role of external challenges at the third stage. The article identifies trends in ongoing structural changes based on comparative economic analysis and confirms trends in the development of small and large forms of farming: both in total gross output and by industry – in livestock farming and crop production. The author's position is substantiated regarding the preservation in the short term of the predominant role of large forms of management in the gross volume of agricultural output, as well as the importance of finding optimal models of relationships between them in the context of achieving new national goals.
