Abstract: The aim of the study was to identify the main trends in the standard of living of the rural population in the regions of the North-Western Federal District (NWFD) based on the analysis of poverty indicators. Data from the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) was used. It is concluded that the poverty rate is gradually decreasing in all regions of the North-West, especially in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, where the lowest rates were reached, 3.5% and 5.4%, respectively. The assessment of changes in the number of rural poor in the regions of the Northwestern Federal District also showed a positive trend in its decline in five regions of the Federation. At the same time, regional differentiation characteristic of rural areas and slower rates of poverty reduction have been identified. This contributes to the persistence of imbalances in the regional structure of the population, a decrease in its number, other unfavorable demographic processes, the outflow of rural residents to urban centers or in the form of internal migration to settlements with a better environment for life. The timely implementation of state programs for the sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas, as well as the need to significantly increase financial support for measures to create more attractive conditions in rural areas, were noted. This will ensure the continuity of the positive dynamics of poverty reduction against the background of modern systemic transformations.
