Abstract: When forming a balanced system of spatial development in Russia, it is strategically important to focus on the socio-economic development of rural areas as a reserve for expanding the area of attractive rural living. However, today we have to face the paradox that, being the basis for ensuring food security in the Russian Federation, there is an impressive imbalance in the possibilities and level of economic and physical accessibility of food between the urban and rural populations permanently residing in rural areas. The appearance in 2021 of the "Sustainable rural development" block in the updated version of the List of indicators in the field of ensuring food security of the Russian Federation is fully justified and appropriate from the point of view of social policy in rural areas. At the same time, examining the indicators included in this block, the need for appropriate methodological studies has been identified to increase the information content and objectivity of monitoring results. Based on the results of the study, a modified List of indicators in the field of ensuring food security in the Russian Federation was proposed, developed on the basis of methodological approaches to improving the accounting and regulatory framework for monitoring the implementation of the Russian Food Security Doctrine, in the direction of "Sustainable rural development". The list of additional indicators included in the block of sustainable rural development is also substantiated, affecting deeper layers of economic and physical accessibility of food for the rural population, affecting socio-economic processes taking place in rural areas, related to the standard of living and demographic situation. It is recommended to conduct a study of the expanded composition of indicators included in the blocks of economic and physical accessibility of food, differentiated by rural and urban populations.
