Abstract: The aim of the study was to analyze the structural shifts in the distribution of crop and livestock production as a factor of spatial development of rural areas in the regions of the North-West over the last 16 years. To study the changes in crop production, all RF subjects in the North-West Federal District were divided into two groups: 1) regions with the prevalence of positive indicators (Kaliningrad, Novgorod and Pskov oblasts); 2) regions with negative indicators of structural shifts (Vologda, Leningrad oblasts and other regions of the district). This allows us to determine the areas of formation of prerequisites for the development or sustainable "compression" of rural space due to the situation in the industry. On the basis of calculations on the production of livestock products, 3 groups of NWFD regions were identified: 1) with the predominance of positive structural shifts; 2) with positive structural shifts in one or two products; 3) with negative structural shifts. As a result, the number of types of products with positive changes and their share by region was established. The assessment of the growth rates of structural changes in agricultural production leads to the conclusion that for the period after the beginning of the State Program for Agricultural Development in 2007 and up to the present time, the most favourable conditions for the development of rural space remain in the Kaliningrad region, to a lesser extent - in the Leningrad, Novgorod and Pskov regions, insignificantly - in the Vologda region and the Komi Republic. In other regions of the European North, structural shifts lead to undesirable problems, which require diversification of production, constant monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of the implemented measures.
