Abstract: The agricultural policy pursued in Russia is aimed primarily at ensuring food security, the main components of which are the economic and physical availability of food to the population. At the same time, it is known that the volume of agricultural production is growing at a higher rate than their consumption per capita, not to mention a serious differentiation by decile groups. The main factor determining the level of economic availability of food to the population is actually disposable cash income, which from 2014 to 2022 decreased by 6.4%, making the situation of poor households critical in terms of consumption of basic food types. At the same time, the measures taken by the state boil down to an increase in nominal income, which does not take into account a more dynamic increase in food prices. In addition, it is the nominal incomes of the population that are the basis for determining their purchasing power. The study made a brief analysis of the economic availability of food to the population of Russia, and also proposed a mechanism to increase the economic availability of food.
