Abstract: Initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are actively developing around the world. In developed countries (e.g. EU, New Zealand, USA, Canada) and developing countries (e.g. China, Brazil, Argentina), carbon footprint management tools are implemented at the state and corporate levels. At the same time, it becomes obvious that the efforts of individual countries cannot solve the global problems of climate change due to the possible carbon leakage to countries and regions with less stringent climate policies. For example, the majority of production processes in the field of raw materials are carried out in countries where the carbon footprint is not subject to control or the corresponding costs are lower. To address the imbalance of government efforts in carbon footprint management, individual national programmes must be harmonized in line with best world practice. The purpose of the article is to summarize the tools for regulating the carbon footprint of agriculture in different countries, as well as highlighting barriers and prospects for their development in Russia. As a result of the study, the problems of introducing a carbon tax in the agri-food system, as well as the prospects for the development of corporate carbon certificates in this area, were highlighted.
