Abstract: The agri-food market was characterized by a particular specificity that distinguished it from other types. The functioning of the agri-food market, indirectly meeting a number of the needs (interests) of the population, enterprises and the State as a whole, thus affected the provision of national security, in which those needs could be identified as national interests relevant to the community of people living within the same State. At the same time, market development poses new problems related to the development of regional agro-food exports and the assessment of the contribution of regions to the development of the national market, to strengthening Russia's position in the world market space, to improving the competitiveness of the national economy and ensuring food security of the country. The authors disclosed and summarized the substantive characteristics of the agro-industrial market in improving the competitiveness of the national economy, taking into account the wide range of various aspects included in the concept of competitiveness. Using the scheme proposed by the authors, it is possible to determine the factors affecting competitiveness (products, enterprises, industries, economies of the State), as well as to identify the reasons for low competitiveness (agro-industrial products/agri-food products).
