Abstract: Achieving the main goals of sustainable development - food security, ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation, adaptation to global climatic changes is impossible without sufficient fresh water resources, the deficit of which is being tested in many countries already today. The dynamics of the change in the share of irrigated land in the total area of farmland is analyzed. The decrease in the share of irrigated lands is noted in most countries of the world, except in India and Bangladesh. Economic factors play a very significant role in changing irrigation areas and volumes of water consumption. The policy of setting water prices is influenced by many factors, including increased competition for affordable water between other sectors of economy, water users, the impact of international trade and the level of prices for food and non-food products. The dynamics and the level of prices, as well as the collection of fees for irrigation water in different countries are analyzed.
