Abstract: Current socioeconomic developments of Brazil as compared to other emerging economies participating in BRICS (including real GDP growth, inflation growth, rate of unemployment, median age of population) are reviewed. The demography of rural areas as well as agricultural employment both in Brazil and other BRICS members are analyzed. It is pointed out that general direction of social policy for rural areas in BRICS is the support of prevailing by number but at the same time the most economically vulnerable minor forms of management and fight against poverty as part of general policy to combat that negative fact in member states. The main part of the article concerns social problems in rural areas directly within Brazil. The term “family farm” is defined. The major forms of state support for family farms within the framework of total agricultural support including formation of minimum guaranteed prices, realizing public purchases of agricultural products, concessional lending and insurance. Information and consultancy support and promotion of alternative innovative directions such as organic agriculture and bio fuel production are observed within state support of small family farms too. Conclusion of the article is dedicated to public policy aimed at fight against poverty in Brazil and reasonability of using the Brazilian social experience by Russia.
